SEO Backlink Checker

Any webmaster who’s serious about attracting traffic understands the value of having inbound links (also known as backlinks) pointing toward their website. The more legitimate backlinks a website has—especially from reputable sources—the more likely the site is to rank highly in search engines. But if you’re just getting started in the world of search engine optimization, you might not know where you stand. Fortunately for you, there are some SEO backlink checkers that are easy enough for anyone to use.

What’s a Backlink Worth?

Still a bit curious as to why backlinks matter? Backlinks are important indicators used by search engines to determine the relevance of a website in relation to a specific search term. And, among other factors, the quantity and quality of your backlinks determine how high (or low) your site ranks on search engine results pages (SERPs). So if you’re working on your site’s SEO for the first time, it’s a good idea to use an SEO backlink tool to find out which websites are linking to yours.

How to Check Your Backlinks

There are numerous applications on the internet that can help you find out which sites on the web are linking to your digital domain. And while no two of these applications are completely identical, any of them are bound to help you if you’re starting from scratch. But with dozens of tools available to use, how are you to know which one is best? The truth is, you’re likely to find lots of inconsistencies by comparing statistics gathered from any two competitors. And depending upon how important website traffic is to you or your business, it might not be worth it to shell out some cash for a tool you might not reap the full value from. That’s why it’s a good idea to start by using a free backlink checker tool, such as the one offered by Google.

Google’s Free Backlink Checking Tool

Google’s Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools) makes it easy to download a list of your backlinks at no charge. Simply set up a free account with the service if you don’t already have one. Then, from the dashboard, click Search Traffic then Links to Your Site. Click the word More from under Who links the most, and you’ll have the option to download a file listing your most recent and relevant backlinks.

Next Steps

Once you’ve downloaded a list of all your backlinks, you’d be well advised to go through the list to make sure all of your inbound links are from upstanding sites that offer at least some degree of authority. A random inbound link from an ugly website that has nothing to do with your own content isn’t likely to do you any good. In fact, it could even be hurting you. That’s why it’s best to identify any suspicious links to your site and either contact the website to remove them, or learn how to disavow those. When you’ve cleaned up your existing backlinks as best as possible, read about how to create backlinks manually, and start boosting your SEO even more.
